Summerfield Methodist Church

ca. 1845

Friday and Saturday, 1 – 5 pm

The Summerfield Methodist Church is a one-story, Greek Revival structure with a simple interior. The church has been altered little since it was constructed.

This Methodist congregation was organized circa 1837. The church absorbed the congregation from nearby Childers Chapel when it burned in 1842. The Methodist congregation from Childers Chapel traces their beginning to circa 1819.

One interesting story is that Bishop Andrews, who lived in Summerfield, split the Methodist Church into north and south over his wife’s slaves which she would not give up.
